  • Died on 29th June, 1944 in Weymouth, Dorset.

This memorial website was created in memory of George Sidney by his great grand-daughter in loving memory.

About George Sidney

George Sidney was the eldest of four children of Mary Jane Turner and John Wilkins.

George’s Father was the landlord of the original Globe Inn in Weymouth, Dorset, which was run by Devenish Brewery.

George Sidney married Emily Eliza Titheridge, and they had three children: Beatrice, Winifred and William. They lived in Newclose Gardens, Weymouth. George Sidney enjoyed exploring the Dorset coast and no matter what his activity, he was a smartly presented gentleman who enjoyed the outdoors and smoking a pipe. Sadly George Sidney was accidentally killed whilst picking roses in a plot of land opposite his home. The area had been previously bombed during WW2, and an unstable roof collapsed, dropping bricks on top of him. This is recorded in a newspaper article from 1979 which is linked below.

  • Baptised 5th April 1874 in Wiltshire.
  • His younger brother William Edward died on the 7th July 1891 in Aden, Yemen.
  • In addition to William Edward he had six other siblings.
  • George and Emily were married in Portsmouth, Hampshire in 1901 when he was 27 years old.
  • George and Emily would have celebrated the coronation of King Edward VII which took place at Westminster Abbey in 1902.
  • He was probably amongst the first to contribute to the government backed insurance system which started in 1911 – what we now call National Insurance.
